Classics Week 3: American Creations and a Tchaikovsky Masterpiece
Friday July 22nd, 2022
6:30 PM – Hanaway Theatre Words on Music
7:30 PM- Hanaway Theatre at the Silver Center for the Arts
Dukas LaPeri-Fanfare
Mazzoli-River Rouge Transfiguration
Williams-Tuba Concerto, Velvet Brown-Principal Tuba
Tchaikovsky-Symphony No. 4 in F Minor
The smokestacks of industrial Detroit and their resemblance to the pipes of a giant organ inspired the young American composer Missy Mazzoli’s River Rouge Transformation, which she says reflects the influence of minimalism, 19th Century Romanticism, techno and indie rock. John Williams (of movie soundtrack fame) and our own Velvet Brown team up for Williams’ Tuba Concerto. Tchaikovsky’s beloved Fourth Symphony concludes the program.
Classics Week 4: Carmina Burana

For his final season as Music Director of the Festival, Maestro Polivnick has chosen to conclude with Carmina Burana, one of the most popular choral works of the 20th century with wild primitivism, repetitive rhythmic forces, and blazing orchestration. Come join us for a musical farewell to Paul, with a stage packed with a mass of choristers, large orchestra, and three vocal soloists of international acclaim!
